Driving Uganda’s Digital Future: Insights from My Business Trip to China

In October–November 2025, I had the privilege of representing Uganda’s digital innovation ecosystem during a transformative business trip to China. The experience deepened my understanding of global digital trade, expanded meaningful partnerships, and highlighted the potential of Uganda’s tech sector on the world stage. The trip combined e-commerce capacity building, international collaboration, and global market exposure through the WTO E-commerce Capacity Building Seminar, a business mission to Chinese technology institutions, and participation in the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE 2025) in Shanghai.

During the seminar organized by MOFCOM, AIBO, and the International Trade Centre, I joined delegates from different regions to explore digital trade frameworks, cross-border e-commerce, policy development, and SME competitiveness. Receiving my certificate at the closing ceremony was a proud moment and a reminder that Uganda must remain active in shaping the future of global e-commerce.

At CIIE 2025, Sumic IT Solutions Ltd exhibited under the ITC Pavilion, showcasing Sumic International Academy and SUMICode AI. The interest from investors, educators, and technology executives reaffirmed our work in youth empowerment, EdTech transformation, and AI-driven innovation.

Our business mission further strengthened partnerships with Chinese institutions and companies exploring African digital markets. We presented Sumic’s capabilities in AI, software development, and proof-of-concept piloting, as well as the vision of Sumic International Academy and opportunities for co-development, technology distribution, and talent exchange. These engagements opened doors for collaboration in digital skills, technology transfer, and joint innovation programs.

The trip reinforced key insights for Uganda’s innovation ecosystem: global trends are rapidly shifting toward AI, e-commerce, and digital skills; Uganda’s youth have immense potential; Asian markets are increasingly interested in African technology talent; and Uganda must strengthen its digital trade readiness.

This mission was a strategic step in positioning Uganda as a competitive player in global digital trade and innovation. As Sumic IT Solutions Ltd, we remain committed to expanding partnerships, supporting digital transformation for MSMEs, strengthening youth skills development, and building global-standard digital products. I extend my appreciation to MOFCOM, AIBO, ITC, and all partners who made this possible, and to the National ICT Innovation Hub for its continuous support to innovators.

Together, we move forward, building a digitally empowered nation and elevating Uganda’s presence on the global innovation map.
